Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

It can be intimidating to show up to a group ride for the first time. . . We totally get it!

We hope this FAQ provides enough information to help you decide whether you'd like to ride with us (and we hope you do!)

If you have any other questions, please email us or send us a message on Instagram @thesundaychug!

Do you really ride EVERY Sunday? What about bad weather?

With extremely rare exception, YES!

Please remember that this is Kansas! Your conductors watch the weather and try to make the best decisions for your safety and enjoyment, but we are not responsible for unexpected weather changes.

What kind of bike do I need?

We welcome any well-maintained bike you feel comfortable riding on rough surfaces for the route distance you're interested in. Though we've seen narrower and wider, the general consensus is that a tire width of 38-50mm is ideal. Most riders are on drop-bar gravel bikes, but a flat-bar hybrid can work, too!

What else should I bring?

What you pack along is up to you, but here are our recommendations!

How fast is the ride?

This freight train tends to average 15-16mph and the strictly no-drop Caboose rolls at about 13mph. Pace leaders in each of these groups will work to support riders from derailment.

You may test your fitness with the Bullet Train off the front, but be prepared to handle the ride on your own if you get dropped from the group.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

YES! For the safety of yourself and the nerves of the other people you'll be riding with, we ask that everyone wears a helmet.

What's with the name?

The imagery of train cars "chugging" along embodied the goals for this ride. It's about moving along at a steady pace and going places together.
